Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in that campaign, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
