Colombian President Says 'I Shall Take Up Arms Again' should American Forces Invades.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the volume of their exchange, further raising tensions between the two countries following American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates cocaine mills and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Escalating Rhetoric coupled with Claims

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the US president threatened similar armed intervention against Bogotá, claiming the nation is “very sick too” and governed by a sick man who enjoys creating narcotics and trafficking it to the US."

Although Colombia is the leading producer of cocaine, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Deteriorating Alliance

This nation has long been a close partner of the United States in the fight combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated dramatically after Trump assumed the presidency.

Its narcotics trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom laid down arms after a landmark accord.

Petro's Firm Answer

When asked if a military operation like that in Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle decades ago, rejected the accusations. "I am not illegitimate nor am I a narco," he declared.

"The US president speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will turn into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. If they capture the president, whom a significant portion of the population admires and supports, they will release the fierce spirit of the nation," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Leader

He passed some years as a young man as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization although reports indicate to have ever took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing a new constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming an influential politician. He served as mayor of the capital city before being elected president.

"I swore to abstain from using a gun ... but in defense of my country I will take up the fight," he said.

Increased Security along with Broad Opposition

The Colombian defence minister reported that the president’s protection team had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have rejected the possibility of American military action against their nation.

Political and Economic Sanctions

American authorities withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he called on US military personnel to disobey orders that violate law. Later, in October, the US enacted economic restrictions targeting Petro, his wife and several key allies.

At the same time while America bolstered its forces in the region and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted operations on boats off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
